About This Game

On the eve of the anniversary of her mother’s death, Aya reflects on the past. Sad, lonely, and desperate for something to help her relive happier times, Aya asks her father if they can do something special in memory of her lost mother. Aya’s father agrees and puts her to bed, promising to make tomorrow a better day. But this fleeting glimpse of light is quickly extinguished when Aya is jolted from her slumber by the sound of her father screaming. She jumps out of bed and runs to find her father, only to find the once-peaceful and somber home now littered with corpses and other horrors. Will Aya end up reuniting with her mother in the most horrific way imaginable at the hands of the undead hordes? Will she manage to escape the manor together with her father’s assistant, Maria? Or will she somehow manage to save her father from the unknown terrors awaiting her around every turn?

Mad Father is an exploration-based horror-adventure game, created by Japanese developer sen.
As Aya, the main character, explore your family’s sprawling manor while making use of the items you find along the way and doing whatever you can to survive the night.

Aya

The young heroine of the story. She consciously avoids getting too close to her father's "research", and does her best to remain blissfully unaware of what her father’s work may entail...

Father

Aya's father. Night after night, he performs horrific experiments in the basement of the family mansion.

Mother

Aya's late mother. She passed away exactly a year before the story begins.

Maria

Assistant to Aya's father.

Ogre

A mysterious salesman who suddenly appears before Aya, seemingly out of nowhere...

Blonde-haired Youth

A mysterious boy who guides Aya along.

Chainsaw

Can be used to destroy objects made of wood, etc.

Command-based action

Input the key/button commands displayed onscreen to perform various actions.

Gems

Crucial items in the game which can be found hidden in various places.
Finding all of them will be tough, but well worth the effort...

Multiple endings

There are three possible endings to the game.
The ending you are shown will depend on your actions.

Corpses

Undead spirits out to attack Aya. If caught, she will gradually lose stamina, and the game will end.
Corpses armed with weapons can kill Aya with a single blow, so be careful.

Like so many people on here before me, I played this when it first came out (the English version, at least). It came out at a time when these types of RPGMaker (in this case Wolf RPG) horror games were plentiful. This was one of the few that really stood out.

This game does a fantastic job building an atmosphere that holds your attention and unnerves you while you play. While there are very few moments that scare the crap out of you, there is always just a bit of tension to keep you on the edge of your seat. So many of the art assets seem like they could come to life at the drop of a hat and attack you, making exploration a bit more tense than it otherwise should be.

If you have never played this game before, and are not using a guide, it should take you about 5-10 hours to explore this game to completion. The extra content is not terribly difficult to access, as there are only a handful of things that need to be done aside from the main story in order to gain access to them. I would say that the extra content is definitely worth it if you enjoyed the main story, as it builds on the story in a pretty meaningful way.

Definitely worth the price, especially compared to a lot of what's out there at the moment. And if you are really strapped for cash, it seems to go on sale quite often. Hopefully, this game gets enough support that the developer continues to build upon this world that includes a spiritual sequel, Misao, which is also available on Steam.. I hate this game very much I regret spending money on this game i am filled with such hatred at these endings. I feel like i have been putting my♥♥♥♥♥♥in a blender for the past 5 hours its just pain, theres no good ending just bittersweet and its not even good bittersweet like sour patch kids its more like you just ate a ♥♥♥♥ing lime and theres like 1 grain of sugar in that ♥♥♥♥♥. Mad Father is a psychological journey that tests and measures the questions about morals, loyalty, and love. This horror game is a well-known classic among the indie game community.

Graphics:
The graphics are 2D pixel with darkness and light atmosphere added. Portraits and in-game picture scenes are added during the course of the story and they lean towards the anime style. I love the details in the areas of the game. Each sprite and character is detailed in this game, so no stock npc stuff added or anything like that. As for the horror? Perfectly pictured. I could explain more, but alas, spoilers. You would have to see the game yourself to understand what I'm talking about.

Controls:
The controls are pretty fluid in this game. You can navigate to places pretty quickly, and you can interact with objects if you have a ! above your head. You can use Z and X to confirm/interact or cancel/key items respectively. You can use the arrow keys to move.

Story:
You follow the story of a girl named Aya, who has a father who keeps his specific "research" to himself. Aya's mother passed away a year ago and doesn't have much left when it comes to someone to talk to. At the stroke of midnight, the day when Aya's mother passed away, strange things start happening around the mansion: dolls coming alive, zombies entering the house, and ghosts wandering around. Aya hears her father scream, knowing that he is in trouble. As you progress to try and rescue him, you reveal details of the past and witness the viewpoints of victims before their lives ended. Your loyalty, love, and morals are tested throughout this strange and corrupted mansion. The story and ending: love it.

Voice acting:
Not much voice, but sometimes there are voices played, mostly by Aya and her father. I love the voice acting and it was done pretty well! It sends shivers through my spine. Only thing is sometimes Aya's "hmm" is a bit annoying, but otherwise great voice acting!

Gameplay:
The gameplay is pretty casual with a tiny bit difficulty. This is due to scenes where you must press arrowkeys in a certain order in order to escape. In order to progress, you have to collect items to open the way or to satisfy the spirits' wishes. There is an optional sidequest where you can collect gems to unlock a special scene and unlock two sections grayed out in the main menu. For a puzzle enthusiast, this is pretty much child's play, so anyone looking for an easy or hard game-this does not disappoint the play styles. There are plenty of save points in this game and save slots to help you, so if you mess up either way, it's not too difficult to do it over again.

Only problem is certain sections of the game is where you have difficult enemies. They move too fast and you have to act at a split second in order to avoid them. This can take a couple of tries, but otherwise easy to avoid in the end.

Music:
Oh my god the music spoke to me. I know it sounds weird but the music is PERFECT for this game. It matches the emotional and horror parts of the game and it sounds so beautiful. No disappointment and not tiring to keep hearing the music.

Overall:
Mad Father is a masterpiece in the psychological horror genre and indie community. This game has everything to piece together a great horror game. With a complex story that makes you question and have suspicion, a gameplay suited for everyone, correct strings pulled for horror, great visuals, and beautiful/horrifying music, this game does not disappoint and it is a must-have in your collection whether you are a horror-enthusiast or indie-enthusiast.

Pros:
-Beautiful and horrifying music.
-Complex, deep story.
-Detailed areas and scenes.
-Great atmosphere.
-Awesome voice acting in some parts.

Cons:
-Some enemies require you to act in a split second, which can take a couple of tries.. So I got this game out of curiosity I’ve always been interested in it but I never got it because I thought it would be another one of those basic Rpg maker horror games. But this game blew my expectations out of the window with the music the story telling and the horror elements. Let’s first talk about the music since I don’t have much to say about it. I loved it each song fit very well with each situation it was part with it either made the situation more creepy or made it more intense. Now the story telling is another thing I liked about this game I loved how we get to see how f****** crazy the father is and Aya still wanting to save him because of the promise she made to her mom, also liked how some of the spirts we got to see why they were killed by the father. Finally the horror oh man I gotta say it was pretty good now it did have a few cliches but it makes up for it with some of its more unique horror not going to spoil them because... I want you to play the game yourself!
. this game is good play it if you have the time. The game is really fun. Beat it in about 3 1/2 hours and got all endings. The music in the game is amazing, the story is interesting and 100% had a good time. If you have the money, buy thins game.
